Matthew Imuetiyan Eguavoen
Nigeria
Matthew Imuetiyan Eguavoen is a Nigerian-born, Lagos-based fine art, documentary and street photographer recognised for his distinct approach of capturing images that chronicle everyday life, culture, and social realities.
Inspired by James Barnor, Matthew’s work emphasizes the intersection between rural and urban spaces and human movement. Matthew’s distinct black-and-white and coloured imagery aims to evoke a sense of quiet contemplation in the viewers. Growing up, Matthew’s parent moved them around a lot. He grew accustomed to piquing interest in documenting these places he has lived in, mentally, which contributed to his interest in photography.
Even though Matthew started out as a contemporary painter, his works relied heavily on photographic references and this shaped how he captures his images. He has had several exhibitions in Africa, Europe and the United State and his works are part of a number of private collections around the world.
