Feng Yan

Exhibiting Artist

Shanghai China

Feng Yan (Frank), originally from Shanghai China and now based in the Netherlands, works across analog and digital photography to examine the body as structure, vessel, and spatial language. His practice is rooted in a sustained engagement with form: not only the visible anatomy of the figure, but also the tensions, silences, and rhythms that shape bodily presence.
At the core of his work is the ongoing series The Shape of Breathing, in which the body is approached as a site of architecture, soft yet load-bearing, intimate yet monumental. Through nude studies, athletic bodies, and body-like forms in nature, Feng constructs a visual field where gesture, concealment, and surface become structural elements. His images move beyond representation and toward a sculptural reading of the human form, where breath itself becomes an organizing force.
Working with film as well as digital processes, Feng places strong emphasis on tonal depth, tactile texture, and the physical integrity of the image. This material sensitivity informs both his visual language and his printing practice, allowing the work to retain a sense of fragility while maintaining formal precision. The result is a body of work that is both intimate and architectural, poetic and disciplined.
Feng Yan’s work has been published in 30+ international magazines, and his practice has also been featured by the Royal Photographic Society (RPS, UK) through both editorial publication and a dedicated feature. His work has been recognized through multiple international awards and distinctions, including honors at the Tokyo International Foto Awards (TIFA), the Budapest International Foto Awards (BIFA), and the Analog Sparks International Film Photography Awards, where he received a Silver Award in the Professional category (Fine Art / Eroticism), along with additional recognition for technique. His recent recognitions also include an Honorable Mention at the ND Awards and an Honorable Mention at the Annual Photography Awards 2025 (APA, Professional Category, People: Body & Nudes). He also holds distinctions/titles from FIAP and IAAP, reflecting his active presence in the international photographic community.
Across his practice, Feng treats photography not merely as image-making, but as a process of constructing meaning through light, form, and embodied presence.
