Anyanwu David
Nigeria
Anyanwu David is a Nigerian visual artist working primarily with photography. Born in Kaduna, Nigeria, his practice spans fine art and documentary photography, exploring identity, symbolism, transformation, and cultural memory through carefully constructed visual narratives. His work examines identity on personal, spiritual, and Afrocentric levels, often using symbolism to reframe familiar ideas in new and reflective ways.
Through his images, he explores how people are shaped by experience, belief, responsibility, and environment. Alongside his conceptual practice, his documentary work focuses on real people and lived human stories. Working largely with locally sourced materials, props, and his immediate environment, he embraces improvisation as part of his process. His practice is rooted in translating imagined ideas into real images.
Key projects include Hope, a series exploring human resilience and the act of holding on to light in difficult times. His recent work, The Breadwinner, examines the emotional and psychological weight of providing. It reflects on how survival and responsibility shape identity, vision, and self-worth. At the core of his practice is a desire to give form to what is often unspoken—using photography to express silence, imagination, and lived experience.
His work has been exhibited at the Plus 234 Art Fair in Lagos and the Journey Exhibition in Port Harcourt, and has been published in various literary magazines including SmokeLong Quarterly, Prism International, and Lolwe Magazine
